Shaping the Future of Dental Prostheses

Rising patient demands for metal free restorations, and improved comfort, as well as clinician demands for improved biomechanical performance are shaping the future of dental prostheses. Over the last decade, dentistry has evidenced an increase in use of full arch metal implant supported prosthetics as a replacement for missing teeth in edentulous patients. In interview, Dr Rajesh Vijay (BDS) shares his experiences of using the JUVORA Dental Disc as an alternative to metal and the benefits he believes it is bringing to his patients. The most important properties of a prosthetic from a patient’s point of view are comfort, and from a clinician’s point of view is biomechanical performance. Traditionally we’d use the materials that we have available which are rigid metals and ceramics. The drawbacks are that we have to understand that the mouth is an impact machine and any impact machine needs a shock absorber. These materials don’t allow shock absorption.

Patients, who chose the PEEK solution provided by JUVORA instead of metal alternative prosthetic frameworks, reported that their comfort levels are much better. The reason that they can say that to me with confidence is usually because they’ve worn a metal based prosthesis, so they can tell the difference.

It seems likely that in the same way dentistry has benefited from a move to a digital working environment – with the introduction of digital scanning, CAD/CAM milling and 3D printing (additive manufacturing) – a transition from traditional metal based materials to metal free high-performance polymers as solutions for premium implant prosthetics, is enabling this next generation of dental patient care.
